Registry Insight- ED40- Updated 18/07/2023
The ED40 was built from 1960-1968 at Allis Chalmers' Essendine Plant in the UK and was powered by a Standard Ricardo 137 Cubic Inch Petrol Engine backed by an 8 Speed Transmission. The ED40 was the last tractor to be produced by the Allis Chalmers subsidiary in Essendine.
Serial number ranges are unknown and build numbers are estimated at 4,000 units, the two tractors in the images here were spotted in Victoria at different times (and are not the same unit)and serial numbers for these are unknown at the time of writing. If you own an ED40 or know of any we would love to hear from you and add them to our Australian Allis Chalmers register. A copy of the Register Form can be found here.

Hello - from the ED40's I've seen in the UK all were diesel, being the Standard 4 cylinder unit that had been fitted in the Ferguson 35. To overcome the poor starting apparently Allis fitted a heavy duty battery and starter and heavier flywheel.
ReplyDeleteI hope this is helpful. Here is a list of serial numbers for the ED40 I have found on the Dutch "PersianOrange.nl" AC collectives website. These appear to be serial numbers for tractors imported into continental Europe, but MAY be helpful to us here.
ReplyDeleteUK built ED40 serial numbers - 1961 (1001-1662)
1962 (2244-2486)
1963 (2960-3481)
1964 (3493-4438)
1965 (4596-4653)
What's with the front axle? All th aussie pics have what looks like a reinforced front axle compared to UK/US versions? Were they updated for Australia? I would love to find one to purchase.
